演講簡介From 2011-2019, I led two major fieldwork projects in southern Vanuatu’s TAFEA province (named for the five islands of Tanna, Aneityum, Futuna, Erromango, and Aniwa). These projects involved close collaboration with the Vanuatu Kaljoral Senta (Vanuatu Cultural Centre) and its network of filwokas (fieldworkers), local guides and knowledge-holders who facilitate research in the islands. The first project was a survey of late 19th and early 20th century mission landscapes in Tanna and Erromango. The second project covered 3000 years of human occupation in the islands, expanding to include an extensive program of survey and excavation of pre-European and colonial sites on Aniwa, Futuna, and Tanna. Local people were deeply embedded in this research, as excavators and community knowledge-holders. Community engagement is an inherent part of working in Vanuatu, but at the same time there are very real limitations to this dynamic because of the ongoing patterns of inequality and resource distribution in the Asia-Pacific region.
