As a historical archaeologist, I integrate archaeological, textual, and oral evidence to explore Taiwan’s recent history through the lens of material culture. One of my research focuses is on former Indigenous settlements in the mountains, which were abandoned due to forced relocation in the 1930s. In collaboration with the Bunun communities of the Lakulaku River Basin, I conduct archaeological surveys of these settlements to examine how past inhabitants engaged with their landscape. Another line of research investigates police outposts in Indigenous territories during the Japanese colonial period. By analyzing the material remains of outpost residents—police officers and their families—I explore their dual identity as both colonizers and a diasporic community.
