Children of Ash and Elm: Revisiting the Vikings

Professor Neil Price(Department of Archaeology and Ancient History and Conservation, Uppsala University)

演講摘要

The Viking Age, c. 750-1050 CE, saw an unprecedented expansion of Scandinavians into the wider world, from the eastern seaboard of North America to the Asian Steppe. But for centuries, the Vikings have been seen through others’ eyes, and often distorted to fit the preferences of the time. Little of this captures the real Vikings, or the richness and sophistication of their culture. This talk introduces a new attempt to tell the story of the Vikings on their own terms: their politics, their cosmology and religion, their material world. Known today for a stereotype of maritime violence, the Vikings exchanged ideas, commodities, technologies and ideologies with the people they met across the Norse diaspora, and were themselves altered in the process.
