演講簡介 | Anthropological methodologies, after the ontological turn, must reemphasize the role of mimesis. Mimesis is crucial because it allows ontologies to project their key participatory roles within ethnographic narratives. This class begins by reviewing classic discussions on mimesis in anthropology, particularly the seminal works of Michael Taussig, to understand how mimesis constitutes a core element of anthropological methodology. We will then engage with Bruno Latour’s critical discourse. I will propose an anthropological reading of Latour’s arguments, which, from the perspective of anthropology, suggests a flattening of the statuses of humans and nonhumans in ethnographic descriptions. In other words, ethnography must simultaneously focus on humans and nonhumans to comprehensively attend to specific human contexts. Latour, albeit indirectly, also argues that such a flattened approach necessitates mimicking not only humans but also nonhumans. Finally, we will explore Donna Haraway’s concept of the Chthulucene, as opposed to the Anthropocene, to learn methods for mimicking nonhumans. This approach can be creatively integrated with the ethnographic methodologies derived from Latour’s discourse, serving as a powerful intellectual source for developing methods of nonhuman mimesis within ethnographic research. |
