Degree course requirements for Leiden University students

 

A total of 28 NTU credits in class work, plus a thesis (6 NTU credits), on the basis of the Leiden thesis are required to receive an MA from the Department of Anthropology.

 

(a) Course requirements:

  • Required courses: (5 credits): Fundamental theories of Cultural Anthropology (3 credits) or Fundamental theories of Archaeology (3 credits), Pre-field research (2 credits)
  • Elective courses (9 credits): This requirement can be fulfilled by selecting any 9 credits of the following courses:
    • Politics and Nationalism in East and SE Asian Archaeological Cultural Heritage (3 credits)
    • Exhibition Design of Archaeological and Ethnological Museum (3 credits)
    • Food and Cultural Heritage (3 credits)
    • Indigenous Peoples and Museums: Changing Concepts, Relationships and Practices (3 credits)
    • Curating and the Application of Anthropological Knowledge (3 credits)
    • Curating and the Ethnographical Analysis of Museum (3 credits)
    • Presenting Anthropological Academic Research Results in English (2 credits)
    • Cultural Property, Human Rights and Intellectual Property Rights (3 credits)
    • Cultural Economy and Globalization (3 credits)
    • Public Archaeology: Theory and Practice (3 credits)
    • Studies on Social and Cultural History of Taiwan (3 credits)
    • Material Culture and Anthropological Theories (3 credits)
    • Theory and Practice of Cultural Property Conservation (3 credits)
    • Cultural Politics and Modernity in Taiwan (3 credits)
    • Topics on the Social and Cultural History of Taiwan: Anthropological Perspectives) (3 credits)
    • Public Anthropology (3 credits)
    • Culture, Community and Everyday Life: Theory and Practice in Anthropology (3 credits)
    • Anthropology and Cultural Policy Study (3 credits)
    • Fundamental theories of Cultural Anthropology (3 credits) or Fundamental theories of Archaeology (3 credits)

 

Amendments to the above course list shall be made as necessary subject the approval of the department head.

  • Electives (14 credits): Any graduate level course offered by the College of Liberal Arts can be used to meet this requirement.

(b) Credit Transfers

Acceptance and transfer of credits from course work done by Leiden University students at Leiden University:

Leiden University students participating in this joint programme will be allowed to transfer up to 12 NTU credits (not including credits towards the second language requirement) from their course work at Leiden University with the approval of the NTU department chair.

 

(c) Thesis requirements (6 credits):

A thesis in either English or Chinese must be written, submitted and accepted pursuant to the

Department of Anthropology’s guidelines in order for a degree to be awarded. Students with a

Leiden MA in heritage studies within the Dual Degree programme may use their Leiden MA thesis

as a working exercise, further to be developed for the DA-NTU thesis.
