演講簡介 | The archaeology of colonial encounters has become a key topic for 21st century historical archaeology. The modern world emerged from a series of cross-cultural interactions between the 1500s and 1800s that highlighted the difference between colonising Europeans and the original inhabitants of colonised lands, usually referred to collectively as “indigenous people” in Anglophone literature. Archaeologies of colonialism have developed unevenly in the Pacific region, with some areas featuring decades of research into diverse topics, as in the British settler society of Aotearoa-New Zealand where historical archaeology has developed since the 1960s. In other areas, recent research has expanded by leaps and bounds, as with studies of missionary sites in Vanuatu since 2011. This talk will provide an overview of some of the key projects and case studies in the regions of Polynesia and Melanesia, while also reflecting on the contemporary meanings and political contexts of research into colonialism in these areas. |
