演講簡介 | The human settlement of the Pacific represents one of the largest migratory movements in human history. Taking its roots in the Bismarck Archipelago and sharing ancestral linguistic connections with Taiwanese communities, Lapita communities are associated with the first human settlers eastward of the Solomon Islands in the southwest Pacific. Situated along the path of Lapita migration, Vanuatu is a key waypoint in the expensive journey of these seafaring communities. Archaeological work across the archipelago has revealed countless archaeological sites, from Lapita cemeteries such as Teouma (2940–2710 BP), to more recent sites like Mangaasi (2200–1200 BP) and others. In this presentation, I will present an overview of the latest archaeological findings in Vanuatu with a focus on pottery. I will share insights into the unique challenges and rewards of conducting archaeological fieldwork in the southwest Pacific. |
