演講簡介 | While the anthropology of climate change is a recent endeavour, it has grown rapidly in depth, breadth and significance during the present century. The first part of this talk indicates why the contribution of anthropology is essential to the interdisciplinary study of, and engagement with, climate change. Tracing the origins and development of the anthropology of climate change in the late 20th century, I then show how the field has become more differentiated, giving examples of the distinctive ways in which anthropologists have studied climate change, from studies of resilience and adaptation to research on renewable energy, climate activism, knowledge and discourses about climate change. These studies are truly global by relating to a major global event, while retaining an emphasis on local realities through ethnographic methods indicating variations in impact and responses to climate change. Anthropological research on climate change is carried out across the world, from Australia to Peru, from Greenland to Mongolia. In conclusion, I argue that anthropology of climate change represents a new approach to globalisation, building on classic and current anthropological theories and methods, as well as marking a new departure. |
