| 演講簡介 | In this presentation I attempt to show possibilities of studies of overseas Chinese religions by means employing Thai as well as Chinese literacies. Cases presented here are the Baba Cemetery in Phuket and Mahayana chanting practices of Chinese temples. In the Baba Cemetery of Phuket, like other places of Thailand, both Chinese and Thai are used in the epigraphs. Comparison of Thai- and Chinese- style tombstones and epigraphs reveals the actual process of assimilation of the Baba (or Straits Chinese) offspring in Phuket. In Mahayana chanting practices, Thai literacy is also inseparably embedded in chanting Chinese texts. The language used in the Mahayana Buddhist temples are a special one, ngou-im, or a mixture of Chinese dialects in a single text. It is Thai literacy that is required in reading, memorizing, and reciting such hybrid texts, since actual reading is not indicated in Chinese characteristics themselves, and we have to rely on Thai alphabets to identify which letter should be read according to which dialect. These encounters of Thai literacy as a part-and-parcel of Chinese religion will enlarge our scope for more profound understanding of the development of Thai urban religious practices. |
